Christmas is here!

It’s that time of year again, when the streets are thronged with Christmas shoppers, fairy lights are twinkling, and every social engagement has swapped a chilled glass of white for a hot mug of red: it’s Christmas!

The lead up to Christmas has been a hectic one. There is a delicate balance between attending each social event decked out in a Christmas jumper and keeping on top of the steady flow of work. Everyone is currently starting work on the next lot of essays due in the first week of the January exam-period. One of the many perks of English at Bristol is that there are no exams in your final year. This means that whilst the rest of the university create copious amounts of colour-coded cue cards, muttering to themselves whilst slightly rocking back and forth, the English students walk round with a smug smile. Of course, it’s not all scoffing at the others: we do have a 3,000-word essay and a 4,000-word essay after all. Whilst the prospect of going home (to heating – the luxury!) and vegetating on the sofa, mince pie crumbs stuck to my face, has practically got me in my onesie already, the essays are not to be forgotten. Although I would much rather spend Christmas watching Elf and Home Alone back-to-back, something tells me that I’m going to have to read some Keats in between. Oh, the life of an English student!

This term has been a packed one, but one that was fun nonetheless. A personal highlight was definitely my house Christmas dinner. Sitting down to eat, with our paper crowns tentatively perched, it was a reminder of how far we have all come in the past two and a half years. I can’t believe we are graduating so soon but I’m so pleased that we’ll all be doing it together.

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope Santa treats you well.
